The Briones Regional Park is located in Contra Costa County. Its terrain is largely grassy with wide canyons. During prehistoric times, portions of the region were covered by savanna and marshes. Fossil remains of extinct mammals have been found in the southern part of the region or nearby.
Coal deposits from earlier geologic eras are also found in the county. In some garden areas, ancient intact seashells can be seen embedded in sandstone layers. At some sites, volcanic ash from extinct volcanoes can also be seen. This park is located at 2537 Reliez Valley Rd, Martinez, CA 94553.
